Early in the week, Hooley's '53 Studebaker
Champion had a cooling system issue while making
their first qualification run. With no cooling
system to cool the superchargered Small Block Chevy,
the motor suffered some top end damage.
While the aluminum heads had to be removed and
rebuilt, Hooley attributes the limited damage to the
Boost Cooler. With the added air charge cooling and
detonation suppresant the motor was able to run 50%
more boost over 5 miles.
Because the damage was limited to just the
heads, the engine could be rebuilt on spot and more
runs were made later in the week
